Ancient Roots, Timeless Treatments

SCIENCE OF LIFE

Ayurveda, often referred to as the science of life, delves into the intricacies of existence, exploring both the positive and negative facets, as well as the states of happiness and sorrow. It encompasses an understanding of what is beneficial or detrimental to life, the means of measuring it, and life itself. Ayurveda posits that the foundation for achieving the four fundamental aims of life – Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha – lies in positive health. This state is defined by Dosha Dhatu Samya, signifying a well-balanced metabolism, and Prasanna Atma Indriya Manah, denoting a harmonious state of the soul, senses, and mind.

In the Ayurvedic worldview, the entire universe is composed of the Panchamahabhutas, the five basic elements of life – Akasha (Space), Vayu (Air), Teja (Fire), Jala (Water), and Prithvi (Earth). These elements combine in infinite proportions, rendering each form of matter distinctly unique. Tridosas, namely Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, are the three bodily humors according to Ayurveda. They govern physiological and psychological functions, acting as dynamic forces shaping growth and decay.

Ayurvedic physiology further delineates the Saptadhatu, the seven structural and supporting units of the body. These tissues play vital roles in development, nourishment, and sustaining the body's structure. Ojas, considered the essence present in every Dhatu, serves as the core of the seven tissues, fostering consciousness, purity in thoughts, health, positivity, immunity, longevity, intelligence, and memory.

The three primary Malas, or waste products – Purisha (faeces), Mutra (urine), and Sveda (sweat) – are integral to the normal digestive and metabolic processes. The biological fire, Agni, governs metabolism, influencing digestion, absorption of nutrients, and cellular transformations. The entire sequence of chemical interactions and changes in the body and mind is orchestrated by Agni.

Srotas, the inner transport system of the body, act as a platform for the activities of vital bio-factors such as the three Doshas, seven Dhatu, Ojas, Agni, thoughts, and emotions. The unimpeded functioning of Srotas is crucial for transporting materials to their required sites, and any blockages can lead to various diseases within the Ayurvedic framework.

THE 8 BRANCHES

TREATMENT MODALITIES

NIDAN PARIVARJAN (Avoidance of Disease-Causing and Aggravating Factors)

Nidan Parivarjan involves steering clear of factors in diet and lifestyle that can lead to or worsen a disease. This approach revolves around the concept of refraining from elements that may precipitate or exacerbate the development of a particular ailment.

SHAMANA THERAPY (Palliative Treatment)

Shamana therapy focuses on alleviating vitiated humors (Doshas). The process of restoring vitiated humor to normal without upsetting the balance of other humors is known as Shamana. This treatment employs various methods, including the use of appetizers, digestive drugs, exercise, exposure to sunlight, and fresh air. Palliatives and sedatives are also incorporated into this form of treatment.

SHODHANA THERAPY (Purification Treatment)

Shodhana therapy aims to eliminate the root causes of somatic and psychosomatic diseases through internal and external purification processes. Common practices in this therapy involve Panchakarma and pre-panchakarma procedures, which contribute to the purification of the body.

SATVAVAJAYA (Psychotherapy)

Satvavajaya treatment is dedicated to addressing psychological disorders. It involves restraining the mind from desires for unhealthy objects and fostering qualities such as courage, memory, and concentration. Ayurveda has extensively developed studies in psychology and psychiatry, offering a diverse range of approaches to treat psychic disorders.

PATHYA VYAVASTHA (Prescription of Diet and Activity)

Pathya Vyavastha revolves around prescribing appropriate and inappropriate elements concerning diet, physical activity, habits, and emotional well-being. It encompasses guidelines on what is conducive and what should be avoided based on individual needs and health conditions.
